Day 1 ... Senior Year!

So of course, thats what today's pics are.

My daughter Taylor, goes to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (aka BTWHSPVA)... and is a SENIOR this year in the theatre cluster. Her theatre focus is playwriting and directing... she is sooo looking forward to this year. This is also the 35th anniversary for the school ...

which is kinda cool for this years grads.

I am the PTSA historian (3rd year now) so I get to take pictures of all the school events which means I hang around there quite a bit and photograph pretty much anything I want (yay for me, nay for her). :)

So here are some snapshots of the morning.. kids arriving and meeting at their respective cluster locations. I like my job.

This has been my most chaotic year yet. Business and personally speaking. I won't go into much detail bc I need to make this quick... But i want everyone to know whats up.

As of now, the biz has gone from 3 to just me. So I am making major changes to be able to handle things myself. I'm in the process of changing all my packages... Senior packages are done (along with a new website) but the kids packages won't change for at least a couple more weeks. Also, no more in house consultations unless requested. All orders will now be placed online. Effective now.

I was in the Honduras a week ago doing photojournalism work and this week I am packing, reorganizing and registering my daughter for her SENIOR year. Ugh. I have three sessions I HAVE to get edited THIS week as well so I am diligently trying to get that done. SO Jordan, Timberlyn, and Chandler... I promise you will get those this week!

Ok. So that's my quick and not so detailed update. :)

I had a TERRIFIC time shooting Delaney!

She went with our RockStar session which is an all day session including lunch... so we had plenty of time to PLAY! We also did an "Alter-Ego" shot (pictured in the middle) where I took two photos of her in two different outfits and positions and put them together for one unique photograph. Thanks Delaney for playing along! :)

where i am.

the month has flown by... but it doesn't feel like it. i have never lost anyone this close to me before. yes, my grandparents deaths were hard, but nothing like this. kay was the person that gave me her old SLR and taught me to use it. she was the person that encouraged and supported me to leave the radiology field to follow my he(art) of becoming a professional photographer. she was quite possibly my biggest fan. and she certainly understood me more than anyone.

to be honest i have been severely depressed the last few weeks and many days didn't get out of bed. i gave serious consideration to shutting down the business. finish up loose ends and be done. i just didn't care. truly.

i had a few sessions already scheduled so i forced myself to do them. the first session was horrible. i was late, cried, and double booked another client that showed up at the same time. then cried some more.

basically i've just periodically come up to the studio for a shoot and then returned home. i have not answered phone calls or inquiries or many emails. i came to the studio today almost surprised the electricity was still on since i didn't remember paying the bill.

so that's where i've been. more importantly, i want to tell you where i am now.

thanks to time and anti-depressants i am getting some feeling back. ;) every day is a little better and brighter. today is the first day i have come up to the studio to work. typically, i was here every day mon - fri. so as of now, i am officially getting back into that routine.

for my clients, that means i will be working on finally getting your stuff to you. i think i have about 14 clients waiting on either edits, orders, albums or proofs. i want to thank every single one of you for being so patient and kind. i'm sure many of you are frustrated and i sincerely apologize. i will be working diligently to fulfill every one of my obligations to you as quickly as possible.

i'm back.

Someone very close to me got very ill 3 weeks ago. I spent the last week with her at the hospital and she has now passed away. Going through some things I haven't experienced before. I am just really sad.

I am not scheduling any sessions in the next two weeks and I will be working on editing clients proofs as I can. Please have patience with me during this difficult time. Thank you, leslie.

I hereby declare January the month of belly bumps and babies! So since I haven't blogged along... I thought since its the 31st I should at least share a pic from each session this month. Its the least I could do. :)

I won't lie... I wasn't prepared. January is always one of the slowest months of the year... which is fine with me bc of all the holiday chaos in Dec. ... it gives me a chance to work on really fun stuff like databases, new marketing, updating the websites, the studio, and the like. (kidding about it being fun...)

But this Jan. was very different. And it was FUN! New moms (um.. super hot moms!!!) and babies abound. Enjoy! :)

Yes I've been a bad blogger... I even went out of town for a week and didnt tell anyone! ;)

I just returned home last night from Imaging USA in San Antonio... Professional Photogs of America's (PPA) convention and trade show. It was really great seeing people, socializing, and getting re-inspired!
I took my intern Elisa and we met up with Nikki and her photog friend from Chicago, Laura. We a great time so I thought I would share my iPhone photo documentary...

Just a quick note to say merry christmas to all you wonderful people and let you know we got a terrific gift... Taylor is doing MUCH better! She is almost completely back to her old self. Diagnosed with mastoiditis due to a viral infection... Which was causing vertigo and headaches. So so thankful she's getting better by the day.

Thanks for all your warm wishes and thoughts during the last several weeks.. It has meant so much. :)

Something different..

So I am staying home with the sick kid today (she had an MRI Thursday and we're still waiting on results)... And I wanted to fix her favorite lunch so I thought I would share. :)

When I was studying photography abroad in London, I befriended a Japanese student there that taught me a different spin on poor students favorite meal... Ramen noodles.

Put just an inch of water in a small skillet and get it boiling. Then add the "noodle square". Flip it over back and forth until the noodles soften and begin to break apart. Then add pieces of turkey or ham lunchmeat. Then add an egg and stir. (I also usually add a little green onion but I'm out.)

Add the seasoning or substitute with soy sauce. Enjoy!

I photographed Reid's sister Bailey a few years ago... I couldn't believe it was already time for Reid! Such a beautiful girl! Can you believe the picture in the upper left corner was taken in NOVEMBER?? LOVE IT!

A quick update with other news... My kiddo is still sick. She has now missed 5 whole days of school and no clue what's going on with her. Headaches and dizziness have kept her in bed for 7 days. We hope our dr. figures out the mystery diagnosis soon. Oy. I am working around her illness, but it has definitely slowed production times down. It's 8:00pm and I will probably be at the studio for another hour... trying to get caught up so everyone gets their holiday orders on time. Somewhat. ;)

I hope everyones Thanksgiving was wonderful! Mine was good... but as usual I had my daughter's birthday plans to coordinate as well. She turned 17!!! I cant believe it. Ughh. Unfortunately she also got sick and has been home from school for 3 days... so i am a little behind but catching up fast! ;)

He was so funny... he was in a great mood.. then fell asleep for about 20 minutes.. then woke back up in an even better mood and was ALL SMILES! Ok, that never happens so i was loving it! Before i get to the "fun family".. I have a few updates. Holiday mini-session clients can now pick up their cards.. just call or email me to let me know when you will be by to pick up. We will be in the office through Wed. The rest will be finished up and ready for pick up next week.

With 17 sessions in November.. it has been a crazy month! We are taking off Thanksgiving day...through the weekend (for a much needed break!) and will be back in the office on Monday. :)

Now for a sneak peak of a super cute, super fun, super nice family! This session was plagued with hardship due to a power outage, my camera BREAKING, and ultimately resulting in the loss of daylight. BUT, they were SOOO understanding and sweet about it all and we got through with some AMAZING pictures! See??

Henry and Van | Dallas Child Photographer

Oh Henry! I have been photographing 5 year old Henry since he was just 3 MONTHS OLD! He is by far Urban Photography's "Most Photographed Child". We did the Movin' On Up package with him (4 sessions his first year), then one at 18 months and another at 24 months (they change SO much when they are small!) then one a year since his 2nd birthday. All in all I have photographed him... 9 times plus a couple of shots with him when I took pics of his nanny's family... and then the time he tried out for Dallas Child Cover Model... so 11 times in 5 years... oh wait i think there was a bluebonnet session in there somewhere... 12 times? Ok, so I have officially lost count. For fun lets take a look back...

Isn't he sweet? These babies grow so fast. :(

Now he's a big 5 year old with a 1 year old little brother, Van. Since their birthdays are so close together we did a session last Saturday with both of them. It was a beautiful fall morning so we took full advantage of it.

Hope everyone had a fun-filled Halloween weekend... i sure did! :) This year we decided on a group theme for costumes... and RYAN came up with the brilliant idea to do a French Cabaret troop, a la Lucent Dossier style. I think we had more fun planning the costumes, make-up and getting ready than the actual party itself! Sooo, i thought i would share...

So our troop consisted of 10 peeps, friends Jamie, Angel, Brad, baby Bryon, Jay, Dave, Ryan (the Ringmaster...of course), me, Shannon and the kiddo..Taylor. Thanks to my buddies for a GREAT halloween year! :)

i got it. the meanest one of the lot. it bit me hard and didnt want to let go. but i think i am finally rid of it and recovering. not to turn the blog into a public service announcement, but wash your hands several times a day... don't get coughed on... dont drink after others... or share a meatball with them either. 400 students were absent from Rockwall HS with this damn bug on monday. So BE CAREFUL.

so this is DAY 4 for me. I have been bedridden since Sunday morning.. but today i am trying to work from home... we'll see how that goes. i still haven't eaten more than a piece or two of toast.. so i hope to get my appetite back today and get some much needed energy.

that said... i am FAR behind in the editing dept. unfortunately, there is one photographer and one editor.. me and me. so dates are going to have to be pushed back by the amount of days i've been out... let's say 3.
so if you were expecting something today... expect it friday.. and so on.

now if you are expecting something..wait the 3 extra days and if you havent heard from from me... ask me about it. because my busy brain mixed with sick brain could easily overlook something. :)

after a somewhat slow summer, things have been picking up around the studio. we had our holiday sessions on Sat. with EIGHT families! there was a little blood, sweat and tears but we made it through the day! :) (side note..the blood came from a daddy getting unintentionally punched in the lip by his 4 year old... not by me. ) haha! but we got awesome shots as always...

my job as PTSA historian and MOM has picked back up as well.. with lots of events to shoot at Arts Magnet... not to mention getting the kid ready to start looking at colleges. oy.

i'm sure many of you are busy bees too, but don't forget to schedule a holiday session if you have not yet done so. in order to have your photos back by Christmas you need to book a session by Nov.20 !

Jennifer and Julie are friends of mine so I was really happy when they announced that they were going to have a baby. After 3 tries of being inseminated, Julie was officially preggers! So after 8 months or so, we had the maternity session at their house.

Julie found a woman to paint her belly for some really unique tummy shots... and of course we had to get in the pool and eat cupcakes... and oh yes, have a beer with Jennifer. :)

Since the maternity session, they had the baby... so I'll be posting pics of the sweet baby girl soon!

Call for entries! Participate in my Texas State Fair photo scavenger hunt! It's just for fun and the goal, as with any photographic endeavor, is to capture amazing photographs... and the winner gets $100 print credit!

these are the two rules to submit

all photos must be from the 2010 texas state fair.
you can only submit one photo per category. (and no, you can't submit the same photo in multiple categories.)

here are three guidelines to keep in mind

it is never a good idea to break the law in order to capture a photograph, i.e. trespassing.
in what is considered a public space, such as an event like the state fair, everyone is fair game for being photographed. this does not mean you can't ask permission of a person, or even ask people to pose. no matter what, you need to respect the privacy of any adult who doesn't want you to photograph her/his children.
please shoot all photographs at the highest quality setting that your camera will allow and keep the original files. it would be a shame to have fantastic photos that can't actually be printed larger than a postage stamp because you had your camera settings on the lowest possible quality.

upload your photos to facebook.
use the photo's caption to list the category in which you are entering that photo. you can also title your photo, but the category needs to be clear.

..so this summer my kiddo has been spending her Saturdays volunteering at A Different Breed. They are a pet adoption organization that rescues dogs from kill shelters and the streets of Dallas... and they do a great job!

3 weeks ago, Taylor tells me she needs to bring this one specific dog home to foster. He was not like the other puppies all hyper and crazy and barky... he was very laid back and somewhat withdrawn. She wanted to bring him home and socialize him... and it worked! He is a very happy puppy and loves to play.. but is still laid back and loves love. He sleeps at the foot of her bed ALL NIGHT and doesn't get up until she does.

His name is Christopher (but we call him Topher), he is 1/2 black lab & 1/2 border collie... and needs a loving family and home. He is great with kids, cats and other dogs and loves to be held like baby. :)

Yes, we were gone and like a dummy i forgot to put my auto-responder "out-of-office" on my email contacts. Soooo, since today was our first day back in the office after a week long hiatus, we will be returning any calls/emails that we missed. Forgive my human err. :)

Which means I usually go MIA. Less blogging & less shooting, and spending lots more time with family. I've been traveling around visiting friends and family... and working a little too.

I have actually worked on several commercial projects lately.. with the most recent being Impact Foods.

Impact Foods makes granola that is sold by the bag. I love it for three reasons:

1. my friend started the company :)

2. it is hands down the best granola I have EVER tasted (and I'm not just saying that for you Ben.. it REALLY is.)

and most importantly...

3. every bag sold feeds a hungry child for an entire day

Memorial Weekend

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend and got some R&R. I certainly did. I headed back to San Antonio on Friday with the girls to see Nikki's new baby and family... and baby Rowan is a dream! So sweet and just perfect. I have been wanting to do some newborn shots outside now that its warm enough to have a naked baby out... so we did just that. Thanks to my mom who made this beautiful hammock. It's awesommme! It worked out great and was exactly what I envisioned. Anyway.. here are some pics!

During my last trip to San Antonio, Nikki and I experimented with taking underwater maternity shots. I love the way they turned out.. they look like artwork. I would soooo hang this in my house. So I have decided to start offering underwater maternity pics as an add-on option to any maternity session (only while the water's warm!). :)

I went to SAn Antonio the friday before last because my pregnant BFF (nikki) was having her baby. or so we thought. she insists i am there to photograph the birth.. so i go. she also has several photo sessions she is unable to do because of her size (she's a photog too) so i agree to shoot those for her while waiting for baby to come. the next friday rolls around. no baby. so i drive home through the thunderstorms and work over the weekend then teach my Super Monday workshop on (of course) monday. yesterday i get a call from nikki's husband.. and she's going into labor. as tempted as i was to jump in my car to head there and try to make the birth.. i knew i had way too many things here i needed to finish. the rest of yesterday was a blur of calls and emails then after picking my daughter up from school we had to spend the rest of the evening finding\buying her a prom dress since i haven't been home and her prom is friday.

needless to say i have had an insane two weeks. i know i'm running behind schedule and i APOLOGIZE profusely to those who are waiting. I am doing nothing but editing today and into the night!!! Thank you all for your patience.. this is our busy season with high school seniors so we're doing our best to keep up!

Hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful weather we have had and I'll post more pics soon!

PS. Nikki had her baby around 4pm yesterday and it was a 9 pound 4 oz. BOY!!! Congrats to her family on the birth of Rowan Jens!

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful family's maternity and newborn session for their precious little girl, Rose.

Recently expecting baby #2, I went to their home to photograph the baby in the belly. Like the first time... they chose not to find out what they were having... so we had a little fun. :)

with a name picked out for a boy and girl... they would ask little Rose, "will it be Pearl or Dean?" "Dean!" she would exclaim!

sooooo... did they get a Pearl or a Dean???

Photo•Topia Workshop scoop!

OK, so I'm going to back up a little here...

Last month Nikki and I had our second Photo•Topia Senior Workshop for professional photogs. This one took place in Dallas at my studio. We managed to get a few more "behind the scene" shots than the first time and I figured it was time to share (better late than never, right??).

Although a couple of people couldn't make it :( The workshop went REALLY well and we had nothing but positive feedback. Yea! Here is what some of the attendees said:

"Love how the two of you are so different! Two great approaches.. so happy to see what is possible! Thank you SO much, L&N!"

"You both covered everything I needed! Lighting, posing, lightroom/photoshop and marketing. Loved the personal approach, learning new tricks of the trade & also new products, must haves! Hope to attend more of these with both Leslie and Nikki!

Yes, it's true. SO much to show and tell... and I will over the next few days. But for now just know that I am back in the office from the break, our workshop went well, I have to tons of pics to share, I will be returning emails and phone calls today and doing LOTS of editing!

So I came across this picture of 7 year old me with 2 year old brother Aaron circa 1980? I have no idea how it got on my computer. As I was about to move it off, I wondered what I could do with it in Photoshop...

Surprisingly, within minutes, I was able to bring back the color, depth and sparkle. Ok, let's not broadcast this to my mother or she will want me to fix ALL her old pictures. Seriously.

Now, if only I could do something about those outfits...

For sometime now, my friend and fellow photog, Nikki and I have been working on putting together a Senior Photography workshop. It has finally happened!

Celebrity Snapshot {Robert Duvall} | Urban Photography

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph a movie legend... Robert Duvall. The Nasher Sculpture Center periodically has celebrity salons known as the Nasher Salon Series. Nasher has arranged to occasionally share the salon with my daughter's HS...
Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He was interviewed by a student along with the head of the theatre cluster, Karon Cogdill.

Being the school historian, I happily fulfilled my duties by photographing the event. Ok, more than happily. I was glued to the side of stage and didn't move the entire time. I kept thinking silly things like.. "my camera is sitting on the stage... Robert Duvall's feet are on this stage a 5 mere feet from me... my camera is in my hands and his feet are on his legs... we are ONE!!!!!" Well, not really.. but there was an intimacy about it. :) Anyway, onto the pics!

As the first photo blog of the year, I think it's absolutely fitting. All about NEW.

This is 5 day old newborn Miss Nina Frances. She slept ever so soundly during her 1st photo session which is the best thing a photographer could ever ask for. So we had ample opportunity to play with some new props... resulting in some darling images. Take a peek!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hope everyone had a terrific holiday!

Mine was wonderful... Christmas was great.. one of my favorite presents was the kitty Litter-Robot ..it is the most amazing invention ever. really. when i realized my cat actually used it, i got excited and made everyone in the house come look at the poo in the tray... a whole new meaning to "the cat left you a present".

But my very favorite was a gift from my daughter. She has always loved writing and has been doing so since about 3rd grade. So she made several hand made books of her writings. She printed out poems, songs, scenes and essays she has written over the last several years and put them together in book form. She gave one to grandparents and aunts and uncles... then recited a couple for us. It was so cute. She worked for several days before Christmas putting them all together. I feel so blessed to have such a good hearted, loving, artistic teenager. I could go on and on.. but i won't. :)

We had a nice New Years Eve at home with friends, food and show tunes... All That Jazz will never sound the same to me again...hahaha.

I decided to be resolution free this year. I don't have the energy to really think it through and I would like to have a year without putting any pressure on myself. Don't we get enough as it is?

2009 was bittersweet for me with the loss of two grandparents contrasted by a wonderful summer of traveling with my family and the most prosperous business year to date. 2009 was also a year of reflection for me... childhood memories and bonding with my parents and brother. I am so thankful that I have a WONDERFUL family... ALL of them. They are all so very caring and nice and fun to be with. Really just lovely. I'm lucky... and I know it.
